5 Decluttering Techniques That Actually Work

Daily Declutter

Decluttering can feel like a monumental task, but when done right, it has the power to transform your space and your life. I know firsthand how overwhelming it can seem, especially if you've been putting it off for a while. But don't worry—I've learned some tried-and-true techniques that make the process a whole lot easier and, dare I say, even enjoyable.

In this post, I'm going to share the 5 decluttering techniques that have truly worked for me and many others. Whether you’re a seasoned minimalist or just starting your decluttering journey, these methods are guaranteed to make a difference.

1. The 5-Minute Daily Declutter

Let’s be real—sometimes you don’t have a whole weekend to dedicate to decluttering. And that’s okay! One of my favorite techniques is the 5-minute daily declutter. You’d be surprised how much can get done in just five minutes.

How it works:

  • Pick a small area in your home—your kitchen counter, a drawer, or even a single shelf.

  • Set a timer for 5 minutes and get to work.

  • Sort through the items quickly: toss, donate, or put back only what you use.

This quick, daily habit keeps clutter from building up and prevents you from feeling overwhelmed by big projects. Plus, it's so easy to fit into your day.

2. The One-In, One-Out Rule

This is a game changer, especially if you have a tendency to accumulate things over time (guilty as charged). The One-In, One-Out Rule is exactly what it sounds like: for every new item you bring into your home, something must go.

How it works:

  • Before purchasing anything new (whether it's clothes, home decor, or even a new book), ask yourself, “What can I donate or toss to make room for this?”

  • This helps keep the balance in your home and keeps you intentional with what you add to your space.

I’ve found this rule especially useful when shopping for new clothes or home accessories. It makes me really think about whether I need the item or if it's just going to add to the clutter.

3. The KonMari Method

Ah, Marie Kondo—she’s the queen of decluttering! While not everyone is a fan of folding clothes into perfect little squares, the core idea behind the KonMari Method is powerful: keep only what sparks joy.

How it works:

  • Tackle categories instead of individual rooms (e.g., clothes, books, papers, etc.).

  • Hold each item and ask yourself: Does this item bring me joy?

  • If it doesn’t, let it go.

I did this a few years ago and was shocked by how many things I was holding onto for no reason. It’s an emotional process, but so worth it.

4. The “Trash Bag” Method

If you want a quick win, the “Trash Bag” method is the way to go. This is the perfect technique if you’re feeling a little overwhelmed and need to see immediate results.

How it works:

  • Grab a trash bag and start walking through your home.

  • Find items that are broken, expired, or just plain useless. Toss them.

  • Be ruthless! You can always go back later if you’re unsure about something.

This technique is liberating, and trust me, once you start filling that bag, you’ll gain momentum to keep going.

5. Declutter by Zone

Instead of focusing on your entire home at once, declutter by “zones.” This method allows you to focus your energy on one small area at a time, which makes it feel less daunting.

How it works:

  • Break your space down into zones—think kitchen counters, entryway, bedroom, etc.

  • Tackle one zone per week and make it your mission to declutter only that space.

This method also lets you see real progress as you move through different areas of your home. It feels rewarding to walk into a room or zone that you’ve completely decluttered and organized.

Decluttering Is a Journey, Not a Sprint

Decluttering Is a Journey, Not a Sprint

I get it—decluttering can feel like a never-ending task, but remember, it's all about progress, not perfection. Celebrate your small wins, and don’t be afraid to take breaks.

As you embark on your decluttering journey, remember that it’s okay to go at your own pace. Whether you use one of these techniques or combine them all, the key is consistency.
